Hakone: A Winter Wonderland Woven with Mist

Known for its rich natural beauty and hot springs, Hakone takes on an entirely different appearance in winter. The thick mist drifting through the forests and valleys creates a captivating sense of seclusion. It transforms familiar scenery into another world—a paradise for photographers. I hope you can feel the atmosphere through the photos I’ve taken.
This journey was a fusion of nature and art. The mist made everything feel eternal, distorting my sense of time.
Hakone Shrine: Shrouded in Mystery
Hakone Shrine is a renowned spiritual spot in the Kanto region, with a history dating back to 757. Nestled amidst the mountains of Hakone and surrounded by the serene Lake Ashi, it’s a sacred place of immense natural beauty. The red torii gate by the lakeshore is especially iconic. When I visited, the shrine was enveloped in mist, adding to its mysterious atmosphere.

One of the most memorable experiences was visiting Hakone Shrine. In the misty darkness, guided only by the light of the lanterns, climbing the steps felt like standing at the entrance to another realm. The iconic red torii gate, usually vivid, appeared even more striking when veiled by the mist. The serene and mysterious ambiance of this space offered a one-of-a-kind spiritual experience.
As I stood before the shrine’s main hall, the soft sound of the wind rustling through the trees blended with the faint chirping of winter birds. It was as if time itself had slowed down. The serenity of the moment left a deep impression on me. The shrine’s history and its connection to nature make it an unforgettable stop for any traveler.
Owakudani: The Valley of Smoke
Owakudani, also known as the “Great Boiling Valley,” is another must-see location in Hakone. Known for its volcanic activity, this area is famous for its sulfuric steam vents and bubbling hot springs. On clear days, you can catch a stunning view of Mount Fuji from here. However, on my visit, the mist added an ethereal quality to the landscape, making it feel like a scene from a fantasy novel.

One of the highlights of Owakudani is its famous black eggs, or “kuro-tamago,” boiled in the hot springs and said to add seven years to your life if eaten. While I wasn’t sure about the legend, I couldn’t resist trying one. The warm egg, paired with the chilly weather, was a simple but memorable treat.

The Open-Air Museum: Art Meets Nature
Art lovers will find their haven at the Hakone Open-Air Museum. Nestled in the mountains, this museum seamlessly blends contemporary sculptures with the natural landscape. Walking through the misty grounds, surrounded by towering sculptures and the winter’s quiet, felt like stepping into a living art gallery. The mist softened the sharp lines of the artwork, giving them a dreamlike appearance.

The Picasso Pavilion, a standout feature of the museum, houses an impressive collection of the artist’s works, including paintings, ceramics, and photographs. Viewing these masterpieces in such a unique setting added an extra layer of depth to the experience.

At the Hakone Karakuri Museum, I managed to take many stunning photos. The colorful and surprising exhibits made it the perfect way to conclude the day.

The Hakone Karakuri Museum is an art museum that showcases unique exhibits using optical illusions. Inside, you’ll find works that appear to pop out when viewed from certain angles and other clever tricks that make for fantastic and fun photos. This playful space is designed to entertain both adults and children alike.
